As a tribute to No. 6, Stan Musial, I’m posting a different historical photo of the greatest Cardinal each day for six consecutive days, Jan. 21-26, 2013. Musial, 92, died Jan. 19, 2013. Each photo is a copy I have collected from a library or archive.
This is the sixth of the six:
On Sept. 22, 1963, in his final appearance at Cincinnati’s Crosley Field, Reds players presented Stan Musial, 42, with a rocking chair. A week later, Sept. 29, Musial would play in his last game, against the Reds at St. Louis, and single in his final at-bat.
In his book “Stan Musial: The Man’s Own Story” Musial wrote, “Every town the Cardinals visited that last time around, the fans and ball clubs treated me wonderfully, with a warmth and hospitality that stopped short of just the foul lines. Whenever there was a ceremony bidding me goodbye, I didn’t hit a lick.” Musial finished his 22-season big-league career with a .331 batting average, 475 home runs and 1,956 RBI.
