As a tribute to No. 6, Stan Musial, I’m posting a different historical photo of the greatest Cardinal each day for six consecutive days, Jan. 21-26, 2013. Musial, 92, died Jan. 19, 2013. Each photo is a copy I have collected from a library or archive.
This is the third of the six:
Stan Musial and Lillian Musial were married for more than 70 years until she died in May 2012 at 91. They were high school sweethearts in Donora, Pa., and their long and loving relationship was one of the great romances in baseball history.
In May 1958, Stan got his 3,000th career hit. Lillian watched from a seat near the first-base dugout at Wrigley Field in Chicago. When Stan left the field for a pinch-runner, he went to Lillian and they kissed and embraced. In his book “Stan Musial: The Man’s Own Story” (1964, Doubleday), Musial wrote, “A photographer asked, ‘Say, Stan, did you know that blonde?’ I laughed. ‘I’d better,’ I told him. ‘That’s my wife.’ ”
Next: The Man and the Mick.
Great post.
